Follett’s Island Beach Camping north of Surfside Beach, Texas

Surfside Beach, Texas is located on Follett’s Island just South West of Galveston Island. Surfside is a great little community with a few restaurants and shops. This is the most popular surfing destination close to Houston. Follett’s Island has 13 miles of beach with FREE camping. There are no permits to worry about. Camping is not permitted on the beach within the town limits of Surfside Beach. Don’t worry, Surfside is not that big of a town. If you want to drive on the beach within the town of Surfside then you must purchase a permit for $10 from one of the local gas stations in town. Outside of town there is no need for a permit. The most relaxing places to camp are along the shore on the Northern part of the island towards San Luis Pass. Here you can find a nice and relaxing area far from the touristy draw of Surfside. Keep in mind you are on the beach so salt spray will cover everything and sand will be everywhere! As long as you don’t mind the salt and the sand then you are in for a really unique experience. See the map below for beach access and suggested camping spots. The beach is hard packed, but please still keep and eye out for soft spots. Also, be mindful of tides and storm surge. Stay closer to the dune, but not on the dune. Suggest spending the first night at Blue Water RV Resort to fill the water tank and charge the batteries.
